Welcome to Mrs Sutton's Science page

Bird beak evolution practical activity with a William Allitt science teacher

For the first half of the Spring Term our topic will be 'Inheritance and Evolution'.

We will learn to recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. We will identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution. The children will explore the work of Charles Darwin and carry out their own experiments about natural selection. We will also look at fossils and the information that they can provide about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.

During the second half of the term we will look further at reproduction in plants and animals, as well as exploring different life cycles. We will learn about the work Carl Linnaeus on classification and describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals. The children will think about reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics
