Welcome to Beavers

Beavers is the home to our year 1 and 2 children. Our fabulous Teacher is Miss Twells and our terrific Teaching Assistant is Mrs Foster. On a Tuesday morning after phonics, children will be taught by Mrs Losty until lunch time, whilst Miss Twells is on PPA. They will be taught Maths, Music and PSHE.

Drawing Club

Drawing Club is a true adventure for Reception and KS1. It is based around the golden blend of picture books, tales and animations, it involves a short period of time together as a whole class followed by time with children exploring their ideas and creativity. Drawing Club helps to immerse children in the world of story, it allows us to share a treasure trove of vocabulary with children to open up the playground of language to them. The best bit about Drawing Club, is that it helps to develop children’s imagination and to show them that they are extraordinary.

P.E. 

We're thrilled to have a dedicated sports coach in school, Mr Gilbert, who delivers our P.E. lessons. Beavers  have P.E on a Tuesday afternoon for 1 hour. They also have P.E on a Wednesday afternoon for 1 hour,  Beavers need to come in their PE kit to school on both days and must be wearing either black or white trainers or pumps. Please make sure to take earrings out or cover them before they come to school and make sure that long hair is tied up.

Homework and spellings  

Year 1 and 2 will get one piece of homework a week, alternating between Maths and English, alongside this, they will get 10 spellings to learn each week, which correlates to their phonics learning and matches their reading books. Spelling overviews will be sent home half termly. Homework is handed-out on a Monday and is due back in a week later on the following Monday. Reading at home 

To best support us in teaching your child how to read, we ask that you read the decodable text provided by the school four times across the week. Spending 10 minutes a day reading with your child will hugely support them in their journey to becoming an independent reader.

We will be changing children’s books once a week on Fridays, this allows your child to re-read each text several times building their confidence and fluency. This is especially important as they begin to learn that the sounds within our language can be spelled in different ways.

A key part of learning to read is children re-reading words and sentences that they can decode (sound out) until they are fluent (read with ease and precision). By reading texts several times children have the greatest opportunity to achieve this fluency.

The texts sent home are carefully matched to the teaching taking place in school. Your child will be practising what they have been taught in school with you at home. We will only ask children to read books independently when they can decode these by themselves.

Books that are not yet decodable for the children will be sent home as sharing books. These books are there for you to read with your child, helping us to instil a love of reading from the very beginning of their reading journey. These could be read together with your child with them reading the words they are able to decode, or you can read the books to your child.
