Mental Health & Wellbeing

Mental Health & Wellbeing at Rosliston CE Primary School

Mental Health Lead: Mrs J Daniels

Mental Health First Aider: Mrs A Flatt

At Rosliston CE Primary School, we take the mental health and emotional wellbeing of our whole school community very seriously and work diligently to support pupils, families and staff.

We use the Entrust PSHE scheme to deliver quality PSHE lessons to all of our pupils.

You can find more information about our approach to PSHE here: https://www.rosliston.derbyshire.sch.uk/pshe-and-rse/

Our Headteacher, Mrs Daniels, has completed the Department for Education 'Mental Health Lead' course and proudly holds this qualification. Both Mrs Daniels and Mrs Flatt wear their 'Mental Health Champion' badges on their lanyards with pride, so that all children, staff and families know that they can speak to them regarding their mental health and wellbeing. They have shared their knowledge and expertise with all of the school staff and everyone works together to ensure there is no stigma, no shame and no concerns around speaking about our mental health and wellbeing.

We recently invested (and undertook training) in the Hamish and Milo scheme. https://hamishandmilo.org/ We're proud to be Hamish and Milo Wellbeing Champions! More information on our Hamish and Milo support can be found at the bottom of this page.

We're dedicated to supporting our pupils not only through the PSHE curriculum but in devoted, tailored interventions with research-backed, high quality resources. We closely monitor and evaluate our mental health and wellbeing sessions to ensure they are valuable and impactful. Our special wellbeing sessions take place in our newly renovated and affectionately named 'Nook', in which we've made a cosy, comfortable intervention and meeting space which is away from the main school building, offering privacy and peace. We've acquired a comfortable bean bag chair, cushions, a sensory light and lots of lovely, wellbeing-centered decorations to make this a truly calming and welcoming space. In The Nook, you'll even find cuddly toy versions of Hamish and Milo themselves!

We're also proud to work with our friends at Compass: Changing Lives and have fostered a strong, working relationship with experienced colleagues there. You can find more information on this service here: Compass

You can also access the Compass: Changing Lives app, information below.

All of the wonderful training, professional development and opportunities undertaken by our staff make the team at Rosliston passionate, empathetic advocates for our pupils and families. Some of our awards, accolades and services that we work with can be seen below.

Hamish & Milo

"Our approach is built within the theoretical landscape of relational connection and the comfort and emotional safety in feeling you ‘belong’ as part of a social group. We know that nurturing relationships create a safe and trusting connection and this is at the heart of Hamish & Milo for children to feel happier, heard and connected.

The framework for Hamish & Milo therefore comes from a range of theoretical contexts which hold the quality of relationship at the core of support work and togetherness with peers as a social group. Hamish & Milo is based on attachment aware theory and the importance of early social and emotional development, as well as understanding the emotional stress that many children with SEMH needs experience and the impact on the developing child."

We have currently bought-into four of the Hamish and Milo schemes after auditing our pupils and feeling that these will meet the needs of our pupils best:

If you feel your child/ren would benefit from interventions on any of the themes above: Resilience, Exploding, Amazing or Calming, please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance. You can contact them via their class email address.
