Phonics

"A very large majority of pupils meet the expected standard of the Year 1 phonics screening check. The effective teaching of phonics and tailored interventions ensure that most pupils can successfully decode words."  Ofsted Report 2019

Phonics is taught systematically throughout Year 1 and Year 2, following the National Curriculum required sounds.  Each week the children learn new sounds and also revisit previously learned sounds to ensure their knowledge is embedded.  This allows them to continually expand their breadth of sounds and to increase their confidence in their ability to decode.

We teach Phonics alongside Guided Reading where the children can really bring a book to life with their expression and understanding of punctuation.  We learn all about vocabulary, inference,

making predictions, and retrieving information from a text.

The children also love to take part in Infant Library which is held every Wednesday afternoon at 2.10pm in the Reception and Class 1/2 classrooms.  Each week the children can borrow a book from the school library and take time reading with their friends.  We also have a surprise reader at the end of every  Infant Library session as this gives the children wonderful access to different styles, accents and interpretations of a book.  If there are any adults who would like to 'volunteer' to be a surprise reader, please let us know at school.
